Research into podcasting for children and young people

Adam Woodgate, Senior Vice-President Media Insights, Dubit, UK discussed their global kids’ media tracker into the audio habits of children and young people.

Adam Woodgate, Senior Vice-President Media Insights, Dubit, UK discussed their global kids’ media tracker into the audio habits of children and young people, under the age of 18.

He discussed the access to TV, tablets, games consoles, laptops and phones that children now have. And he said that children generally have control of between 2 and 3 devices in their home. This could be their own device, or another they have use of. More children have their own smartphone than a TV now.

Adam said that in the UK children spend 11 hours 48 on smartphones every week; playing games and watching videos are the most popular activities, although listening to music also features heavily. And this is growing over time, particularly in the afternoons after school.

He talked specifically about podcasts and the reasons young people listen to podcasts; they cater for a range of tastes, they’re great for car journeys, kids can self-select them according to their mood, they encourage them to learn and be active, they’re relatively cheap for parents and they’re not seen as ‘screen time’.
